Coachella will soon retreat from Indio, California (and your Instagram feeds) for a whole year, but summer festival season is just getting started. That’s why we’re coming at you with more makeup ideas for Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Panorama, Firefly, and every hot ticket in between. We called on Helen Phillips, the national makeup artist at Sephora , to share some new festival makeup ideas.

If you’re lucky enough to be attending Coachella weekend two, Phillips can actually be found in person dishing makeup tips at Sephora’s tent. For the second year in a row as an official Coachella partner, the beauty giant is hosting free makeup touch-ups using Sephora Collection’s newest launches. Festival goers will also be treated to on-site hair styling from Bumble and Bumble, IGK, Amika, and Hush.

For the rest of us enviously watching from afar, Phillips thankfully lent her wisdom to help plan our looks for the rest of summer’s concerts. Get your ‘grams ready!

1. Graphic Liner

Ditch the basic cateye. Phillips said festivals are a time to “play a little bit more bold and fun.” So rather than rimming your eyes in black liquid, try unexpected hues in unconventional shapes.

“Make it more graphic,” she advised, “The big thing we keep seeing on the runway was swiping in unusual areas: Maybe putting it in the crease or maybe just doing a line under the eye—not making it so exact. Put it on in fun, funky, different ways.”

Even just a single, colorful swipe of floating liner on the crease is high-impact.

Striations of colored liners artfully traced under the brows is a super creative take on classic wings.

A festival is the perfect opportunity to try a neon-bright that you couldn’t wear to work (most likely). Amp the liner look up even more in an irregular shape.

2. Glitter Everywhere

“Glitter and metallics will be everywhere. I think we’ll see it in hair, on the ears, lips, glitter ‘freckles,’ or loosely applied on the lid or above into the brow, or even underneath the eye,” Phillips said. “Glitter is just always a fun look.”

There’s no need to stay “inside the lines” with glitter—stand out by creating abstract, organic streaks of sparkle all over your face.

Sure, glitter is a given at music festivals—just not in unexpected color combos and extra chunky textures.

3. Abstract Shapes

Phillips said she thinks people should be more experimental with “abstract shapes.” She elaborated, “It could just be a random triangle. Something a little bit more fun and funky.”

Turn your face into a modern art canvas with colorful outlines around your features. Very Kandinsky.

If you’re testing out a unique shape, like this rectangle around the eye, complement it with a bare face and simply groomed brows.

4. Temporary Tattoos

Phillips said that metallic temporary tattoos are another low-maintenance way to dress up a festival beauty look. “They’re super long-wearing,” she explained, noting that Sephora Collection has the Shine Beautifully collection of tats ($8) that can be worn on the face and body. “You can put them on your chest, shoulders, or maybe even your back and they look like glitter freckles. It’s a super easy way to supply a makeup look,” she said.

5. Painterly Swipes

Phillips said “painterly swipes” were a smart festival beauty idea because they’re meant to look imperfect. “If it looks a little bit lived in later on,” she explained. “If you’re wearing a more painterly shape on your lid it’s okay if it’s a little bit shiny-looking or even smudged.”

Combine both warm and cool shades and apply them like fingerpaint for an artsy vibe.

Opt for a murky watercolor effect to soften bright primaries like red, blue, and yellow. The more diffuse, the better.
