Dressing for the work week when it’s 90 degrees outside and 60 degrees inside can be daunting. You want to stay cool, yes, but should probably avoid wearing anything that’s too revealing because…well, you still work in an office (no matter how casual it may be!). To find out how to strike that perfect balance, I reached out to Intermix’s chief merchant, Silvia Merati, for some office dressing tips.

Responsible for the Intermix merchandising direction across all its stores and online (including its new summer shop), it’s safe to say Merati understand hows to conquer this very specific issue. Read on for her pearls of wisdom.

Daytime dresses are key

“I love an elevated one like this option from Self-Portrait. It’s a versatile piece that can be paired with flats or sneakers and still look put together.”

Invest in your wardrobe essentials…

“Quality is key. Build your wardrobe with the best essentials—tees, knits, denim—and then update with a few new fashion must-haves each season. I always have my staples, but then mix in some trendier pieces. Right now I am in love with Monse and Attico, both of which we’re launching for fall.”

…then build around them

“I always start with an essential like a white tee then incorporate statement pieces like a Missoni metallic pleated skirt, Cult Gaia bamboo clutch or colorful Gucci sunglasses. They make for the perfect summer outfit that’s sophisticated and fun.”

Have your work go-to staples at the ready

“Dressing for a work engagement during the summer can sometimes be challenging, so stocking your wardrobe with staples that you can build around is key. My go-to is a high-waisted trouser or a double breasted jacket. If you want to look professional but still stylish, you can’t go wrong with either of these. Add a silk camisole underneath so you can easily transition to post-event dinner or drinks and still feel summery.”

Experiment with denim

“Pants, skirts, a jacket—you can wear denim almost everywhere, especially during the summer. Denim is having a moment right now with washes, cuts and styles that feel novel and refreshing for the season. We’ve added a ton of amazing brands like Ksubi, RE/DONE and SJYP to our roster and are constantly looking for what’s new and next.”

Metallic accessories take your look to the next level

“If I’m looking to elevate a look, I usually gravitate towards something metallic. It can be anything from a bag to a shoe, but the smallest touch of metallic instantly makes an outfit look and feel special.”
